So those who know me, know how much I love my music, I’m the person that will go out and PURCHASE an album, I’ve never downloaded anything in my life. Strictly cassettes and CD’s. I’m proud of it. I’ve been trying to keep up with everything though, some of the last albums I purchased were: Chrisette Michele, Asher Roth, BEP, Keri Hilson, Joss Stone and the list goes on.
So a lil while back, me n the lovey went to go check a friend and kick back. She started on some tunes…excuse me CHYUNES. We were reminiscing like mad. We’re all generally 84-85’ babies so we knew all these chyunes. Some SWV, Excape, Boys II Men, TLC and the playlist went on. It became a trivia game. At that point I realized we grew up in one of the best times musically. They don’t make RnB like they used to. None of it feels the same. Now all we have is Trey singing about sexing your girl, or wanting so sex your girl, or what he’ll do to your girl, or what he did to your girls girl last week. Its just raunchy. As much as we enjoy the music, its content is so dry. So lately I’ve been turned off from the radio and the mainstream music cause its so dry and tasteless.

Amazingly enough I consider myself relatively patriotic. I mean I don’t sport any of the “I Am Canadian” gears, but I’ll wave a flag at a game if available. But one thing that I find Canada (Toronto of course) does really well, is make music. We have some pretty heavy hitters out there already, and some heavy hitters underground. I mean the recognition within the City is nothing but love. It doesn’t really matter what they think down South.
The local talent is just insane. Right now one of our local heavy contenders is triple threat Rich Kidd; Producer, rapper, hype man! If you’ve ever wanted to see a performance…you know who to look for, this man is crazy insane on stage and you cannot and will not ever be bored.
Alongside Rich, we have Junia-T, Smash Bovas, Melanie Fiona (who by the way represented us beautifully at the Grammys’) Melanie Durant, Blake Carrington, Saukrates, Kardinal of course, Fefe Dobson, Rochester AKA Juice (and the Entire Foundation Fam, Jevan, Lincoln), Drake Drizzy izzy Pizzy, Jessica K, Tanika Charles, Famous, Knaan, Charlie Black, J-Robb, Classified, Redway…and the list will never ever end.
I think its safe to consider certain heads in Canadian Hip-Hop as relatively "Ol School" by now. Although still dope, they kinda up there; the Choclaire, Jully Black, Northern Touch even alongside Baby Blue Sound Crew. Thats the Canadian music and artists my older sister grew on and I picked up on the way down, but the new genaration consists of a crazy mix of heads. Its exciting to see where it all goes.
The whole point of this rant is; don’t sleep on our city, and try new things. Canada has just as much talent, you just have to go out and see it for yourself. Luckily for me I have some insight on that part of it all. So if you’re ever looking for a show to hit up. I guarantee you I can find you one in the city.
