Her title was stripped and she was once again Haitian born Michaelle Jean, no longer a Governor General, she was a human grieving for brothers and sisters of her homeland as many others have in the past few days. In her attempts to hold back tears, the short speech given by fellow Haitian Governor General Michaelle Jean was nothing short of sincere.
"Stand courageously before this challenge"
In the last 72hrs it’s amazing to see how an island that’s political and social structure, status and all around negative reputation could move and bring the masses together as it has in this grave event. The body counts are still rising, but after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake the damages are only the beginning.
Now I’m not sure how many of you have seen the movie 2012, but I had a chance to watch it with Fancy and her beau (over some Shrimp Alfredo one night). What surprised me and probably shouldnt have was the amount of technology the American Government had in that movie, to the point where they were able to see all the changes in the shifting of the earths plates and were able to time ( down to the second by the way) the destruction and disasters that were coming. So it leads me to question; could anything have been done about the earthquake in Haiti, given our technological advances? Or was it just that no one cared enough to bother doing anything about it? Now I know it’s “just a movie” but I do feel that it had some truths to it, in terms of our knowledge and advancements that are out there but are not being shared with the people who may benefit from it the most. If you get a chance to look at a map in terms of how the earthquake hit, it all just seemed a lil (a lot ) fishy. The Dominican Republic (which by the way is the same island as Haiti) did not get a single ripple of a hit from what I saw. WWWWOOOOORRRDDDD!!!?!?
Another concern of mine is the media coverage and “support” that is going out to aid the people who have been suffering from the disaster. On Wednesday afternoon as I watched a little bit of T.V. I saw Haiti news on almost every channel. Much Music MOD had speakers come out n support and inform viewers on how they could help, BET’s 106th and Park put aside their daily countdown and played “inspiring” and “motivating” songs of hope as well as encouraged options of helping overseas as well. But when I turned to MTV (One of the biggest music, entertainment and social outlets for our generation) I saw not one thing mentioned about the disaster. Now this could be my blatant ignorance to their time slots, maybe it wasn’t a live show, and they were playing a pre-recorded show, but I would have expected them to somehow show concern. But nothing! MTV?? What’s up with that??
I’m not even going to bring up he fact that I feel something is planned out. I know the word “natural disaster” comes to mind, but there’s nothing natural about what’s going on in Haiti, nor was there anything natural about Katrina 6 years ago, Pakistan in 2005, Tsunami across Asia in 2004. Something’s going on!! Keep watching. I’m more concerned with what the state of the country will be 6 years from now once America re-builds it. I can only pray for the best!
